Grab a straw and some paint because today we are doing splatter art! Kids will love watching the paint spread all over!
Do you remember the joy of making a mess as a child? As moms we probably try to keep the mess to a minimum- but where is the fun in that? We need to channel the good old days and remember how fun it is to create freely! This kids craft is a fun and messy activity, so get ready to roll up your sleeves and dive into the colorful world of splatter art!
This project is part of my Kid’s Craft camp! Make sure to click on the image to see all 50 craft ideas!
Supplies to make splatter art
cardstock
paint (we are using acrylic)
water
dropper or paint brush
straw
googly eyes
glue
pens or markers
This project gets a little messy- the paint doesn’t always stay on the paper! So make sure you are working on a surface that can be easily wiped up or lay down a plastic tablecloth before starting!
How to make splatter art
To make some cool images, you need to water down your paint! I did 1 part paint to 1 paint water. The more water, the more it will spread when blown. If don’t want it to run too much you can use less water. I just mix it before starting!
If you have a dropper, you can use it to add a drop or two of paint onto your picture. The bigger the drop, the bigger the splatter will be. We didn’t have a dropper so we just used a paint brush to add a blob of paint!
Then take your straw and BLOW! If you blow directly overhead, it will spread out evenly. If you blow from one side, the splatters will go away from it. Kids can move the paper around to create all different directions of paint blobs!
You can add more than one color to a blob- or keep adding to it if you want it bigger! It’s fun to play around with all different ways! Be creative!
Once you have your splatters all done, lay on a flat surface to dry.
Embellishments
Once your picture is dry you can add some fun embellishments to it!
If you want to do monsters, you can add on googly eyes (or draw on some with a black marker!)
You can also take a pen and add in hands, mouths, teeth, and antennas! I added a spiderweb for my spiders and outlined my flowers!
Here is a picture turned right side and upside down. These monsters look so fun either way!
Variations of splatter art
In case you aren’t a fan of of onsters, here are some other options of things you can turn your splatters into:
Spiders are easy thing to splatter using black paint.
We also did a flower picture! The grass is really fun because you just do a line of paint and blow in one decoration.
You could also turn the splatters into aliens, or sea creatures or make each one a different animal.
I used some tape to tape off my name and splatter paint over it! Peel off the tape when it’s dry to reveal the name!
