How to Use Model Magic as a Versatile Tool for Student Learning

Model Magic® by Crayola is more than just a fun crafting material – it can be used as a powerful tool to enhance learning across various subjects and developmental areas. From sensory play to creative problem-solving, model magic offers endless possibilities for educators and parents looking to engage children in meaningful and hands-on learning experiences.
Soft, squishy and easy for young sculptors to manipulate, Model Magic is an excellent alternative to modeling clay. This non-toxic modeling compound makes creating 3-D projects and sculptures easy and enjoyable. Model Magic is lightweight and easily molded into any form and can be air-dried. Paints easily, is nonstaining and won’t stick to skin or carpets. No messy crumbling. Shape it, mold it, and air-dry to save your projects. Or, put it in a re-sealable containter tp play another day!
Sensory Exploration
The soft pliable texture of Model Magic makes it an ideal medium for children to develop their fine motor skills as the pinch, roll and shape the material. This tactile experience not only helps in strengthening the small muscles in their hands but also enhances their sensory awareness. For children with sensory processing needs, working with model magic can be soothing and an engaging activity, providing a calming sensory input that can help them focus and relax.

Another way model magic can be used for sensory processing needs, is to create sensory touch board. See a tutorial on how to make this below, posted by Crayola. This is a great tool to use for Calming Corners in the classroom for students, also during afterschool, and at home.
Use the marker caps to make circles in the model magic, a pencil to make straight lines, or loop small pieces of the model magic together to make circles or other shapes and stack it on top of your base color. You can also use dough tool sets.

Encourage Self-Expression and Confidence
Model Magic provides children with an outlet to express themselves in a non-verbal way, this can be particularly valuable for those who may have difficultly communicating their thoughts and feelings. As they create, they experience a sense of accomplishment, boosting their self-esteem and confidence. By creating something out of the dough, they can feel encouraged to build more.

Support STEM Learning
Model Magic can also be integrated into educational activities to reinforce learning concepts. Teachers can use it to help students create 3D models of animals, plants, or historical figures, making subjects more engaging. It’s also a great tool for teaching math concepts such as counting, addition, and subtraction by having children create and manipulate small objects like beads or balls.

Emotional Regulation
Lastly, Model Magic can be a valuable tool for emotional regulation. Molding and shaping the compound can be therapeutic, helping children manage stress or anxiety. The focus required for creating detailed models can serve as a mindful activity, allowing children to channel their emotions into a productive and calming process.
For example, creating a rainbow and then practicing some simple breathing exercises while touching each color. Pair this with our Rainbow Breathing Board & Feelings Wheel for another SEL tool.
